Youve been thinking about awkwardness in the workplace all wrong

Youve been thinking about awkwardness in the workplace all wrongYouve been thinking about awkwardness in the workplace all wrongMelissa Dahl looks at the world through cringe colored glasses, but maybe that isnt such a bad thing. In her new bookCringeworthy A Theory of Awkwardness,The Science of Us editor explores the thing we all hate to think about. And being awkward in the workplace is just a part of life.Heck one of the fruchtwein popular television series of all timesThe Office(lets count both the British version and the American one), focused mainly on those unavoidable, daily excruciating occurrences that you face when you are a working person in an office.Awkwardness feels pervasive. It is a feeling that comes up often, Dahl told The Ladders. Its something everybody feels at least once in a while or for me its like once an hour so that was why I was drawn to write the book. Its also not very understood in scientific literature.Though she delves deep with experts into the pain fulness of weird workplace interactions, making presentations, and those dreaded silences, the point that seemed to keep being emphasized was that being awkward and uncomfortable doesnt necessarily have to be a negative thing. In some instances, it can actually be used to your advantage. The power of the awkward silenceWhen there is a lull in the conversation during an interview, or when your boss asks for feedback and the full room of people is absolutely silent many of us go into full panic mode. The awkward silence is one of the fruchtwein dreaded moments for some. But you may just feel this way because you are simply approaching it wrong, according to Dahl.In a salary negotiation, you can actually use silence as a power play as she explains in the bookPerhaps we fill the uncertainty of an awkward silence with our own imaginations, guessing what the pause might be causing the other person to think, and especially what they might be thinking about us A negotiation will automatical ly throw you into this mode of thinking, because its one of the few scenarios in life in which you have to explicitly say, This is what I think Im worth. Do you agree? But if you go into a negotiation prepared and with a number in mind and then use the awkward silence technique, you are playing ball. Dahl interviewed Katie Donovan, founder of the consultancy firm Equal Pay Negotiation, who said after they give you a number say, Thank you for the offer. Im a little surprised about the salary though, followed by SILENCE. The Im surprised by that pause is a lethal combination. During this pause, Donovan explains, the hiring manager is likely trying to work out serious you are and how much more to offer. You want to make them squirm. If youve done the work and you know what you are talking about it is worth taking on the risk, Dahl told The Ladders. One of the other ways to use the awkward silence is to give yourself time to think. Why do we always rush to say everything? Embrace your inn er sloth and let yourself compose what you want to say. Dahl recalls interviewing author Bren Brown and how for each question she would take several seconds before answering. Silence doesnt have to feel confrontational to be effective, writes Dahl.Get out of the awkward vortexEven the most confident of people have experienced that moment where you hone in on something you think you are doing with your mannerisms, the way you talk or even the way you walk. And if you are giving a presentation of some sort or having an important work conversation, she writes that the chance of this increasesI would sometimes get so self-conscious when presenting that it was like part of me had split off from my physical body and was seated with the rest of the editors, most of whom were at least two decades older than me.She describes how the phantom version of herself was watching her actual self give the presentation now because she was so self-conscious. On any given day there are probably at least three phantom people floating around your office staring at their bodies talk. Dahl says try to make it a goal to think beforehand about what you want to get across in this conversation or take away from it.When you are spiraling into the awkwardness vortex try to think about the bigger picture. Dont think about how you are unternehmensverbund your hands or if you sat down weirdly, she told Ladders. The work friendship paradigmThough many studies show that having friends at work can help you be a better employee overall, they are still different and more complex than a purely personal relationship. People sometimes feel obligated to be social even when they may not actually care to be friends with this person. Dahl cites a 2015 paper that identifies multiplex relationships which analyzes the ambivalence of workplace friendships. When you have to play multiple roles it can get really hard, Dahl told Ladders. She writes inCringeworthy A Theory of Awkwardnessthat being as straightforward as possible in these situations is also important and that doesnt have to mean being cruelYou can blame work, saying that youre too busy to listen to them complain or to do their work or to meet up for drinks after work. Most people will get the hint after you do this for a few times. We spend much of our time at work which means inevitably just like in life, its gonna get awkward. As Dahl says, being human is exhausting and embarrassing. There will be some cringeworthy moments that will haunt you but try to think of the bigger picture.Try to put yourself in a wider context. This is not the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to someone. Dont just tell yourself its not that bad, but rather think about how youre not special. Everyone has these moments, Dahl said. Its the opposite of the advice we learned on Sesame Street but when it comes to cringeworthy moments, it is most comforting.

What Is Your Resume Missing You.

What Is Your Resume Missing You. What Is Your Resume Missing You. Early in my career as a magazine journalist, I wanted to land a position as an editor at a local magazine. So instead of rattling off my skills and past work experience (which, to be honest, were slim to none at that point), I wrote a story. I didn’t even bother sending a resume. I figured my “application” would be either tossed in the trash or filed away. I got a call two days later from the magazine’s editor to come in for an interview. I was hired on the spot. In an effort to appear as qualified as possible, job seekers are loading their resumes with skill sets and work accolades. They are cramming that 8 ½ x 11 inch paper with everything but the kitchen sink- and an accurate representation of themselves. But with overburdened hiring managers scanning hundreds of resumes on a weekly basis, you need something to help you stand out from the other possible candidates. That “something” is you. Think of your resume as the professional story of your life. So don’t make it sound mechanical as so many resumes do. Instead, speak about yourself in the first person; don’t be afraid to use the word “I.” Include parts of your personality in the resume, like the fact that you’ve taken pottery classes if you’re applying to work in a design firm. You should also write in full sentences, not fragments. And skip overly used adjectives, like “results-oriented” and “multi-tasker.” On a resume, everyone is a “results-oriented multi-tasker.” After you revamp your resume, read it over. Imagine you’re a potential boss reading your resume for the first time. If after reading your resume you would want to call the candidate in for an interview, then you’ve done a good job! Personalizing your resume doesn’t mean that you have to forgo the traditional resume style. By accenting parts of your resume with your personality, you’re sure to shine a light on your skills, and make yourself a candidate that hiring managers will want to meet. Readers, what does your resume look like? Is it a traditional one, or have you added personality to it? How so? Let us know in the comments section below!

How Project Managers Can Write a Great Resume

How Project Managers Can Write a Great Resume How Project Managers Can Write a Great Resume It All Comes Down to Pain Points and Keywords Folks like software developers and engineers have it easy when it comes to resumes: They can list languages they code in, link to projects they’ve completed, etc. It’s a little tougher for project managers. So much of it is about…well, project management! Going back to the gold-standard definition, it’s getting things done through other people. And that can be hard to pin down succinctly enough for a project management resume. Here are a few tips to help: What to focus on Think about pain points The “how” of project management is getting things done through other people. The “why” of project management, on the other hand, is making the project’s progress and completion look seamless to all of the various stakeholders. What are the most common and/or annoying things that have come up during your projects? What things would your manager have had to deal with personally if you weren’t doing the job? These are the project management pain points you solve, and they’re somewhat universal. Your list will probably include things like missed deadlines, poor work quality, contentious relationships between the team and the project owner, etc. The first step to a killer project management resume is to think in exactly those terms: How your project management skills have solved your employer’s problems â€" or, better yet, kept them from ever coming to their attention in the first place. That’s what your project management resume should highlight - the skills that enabl e you to solve those pain points. But don’t forget ATS More than 70 percent of today’s job openings are filled through applicant tracking systems (ATS). Why? The primary reason is that recruiters get more applications than they could possibly review personally. Applicant tracking systems provide the framework for a database recruiters can use to identify potential candidates. But ATS systems are designed for recruiters, not applicants. They simply respond to the recruiter’s search terms. That means that qualified applicants might not be picked up if they don’t use the same keywords as a recruiter.  For example, many ATS systems treat acronyms differently than they treat the words they stand for. So the system your prospective employer uses might not recognize that “MBA” as the same as “Masters of Business Administration.” The solution Like it or not, you have to deal with your prospective employer’s ATS first. If you don’t, your resume might never make it to a real person. The key is to do it in a way that will still catch the eye of a recruiter once it gets past the ATS. That means going back to the beginning of this post and thinking about the skills you used to resolve the pain points associated with the projects you’ve managed. The next step is to take those skills â€" the things that would interest human recruiters â€" and compare them to the skills listed in the job description of the position you’re applying for. See which keywords in the job description mean about the same thing as the skills you used to resolve pain points, and put those words in your resume, along with specific accomplishments, especially those that can be quantified in terms of sales generated, time saved, etc. Sure, that means you’ll have to customize your resume for each job opening. But that’s the best way to ensure that your resume showcases your strongest skills â€" which is what a recruiter will be looking for â€" while doing it in a way that an ATS will recognize.   Sound like a tall order? It can be, but services like Jobscan can help. Jobscan analyzes both your resume and the job description to see how well they match. Next, they give you detailed suggestions on how you can optimize your resume’s chances of getting past the employer’s ATS. You’ll get recommendations for making sure your resume is structured in a way that an ATS will recognize â€" like the MBA vs. Masters of Business Administration example â€" and for making it more closely match the keywords recruiters use when they search. How to Find Concert Tour Sponsorship

How to Find Concert Tour Sponsorship How to Find Concert Tour Sponsorship Touring is expensive business, so musicians and labels frequently turn to tour sponsors and concert sponsorship opportunities to help them foot the bill. Competition is, of course, intense, and sponsors will, of course, want something in return for their cash. Researching Concert Tour Sponsorship Assess Your Geographical ReachIf youre planning a strictly local event, approach a local business to make your pitch. If youre looking for help on a domestic tour, you need a sponsor who can benefit from being seen around the country - in that case, think regional or national business. The amount of money you need also makes a difference. Certainly asking the local bakery to sponsor your gig to the tune of $2 million isnt likely to get you more than a babka!Create a PlanKnow exactly how much money you need and why - and the answer is not, as much as possible. Formulate a budget for your concert or tour, figure out exactly how much money you need and determine what you need it for. Not only is this process instructive, it will enable you to talk knowledgeably about the financials of your project when convincing sponsors to take a chance on your event. Know What Youre OfferingKeep in mind that this exchange isnt all about someone giving you money. You are offering a branding opportunity, so spend some time analyzing the reasons why potential sponsors should get on board with you. What kind of advertising and branding can you offer? Signage on the stage? The companys name all of the show promotional materials (Presented by...)? Handing out coupons or samples to the audiences? Come ready to discuss these details and be prepared to make your case.Be ready to negotiate and know your limitations. If the company wants to pick the opening act, make a presentation on stage or use your music in their advertising in exchange for their sponsorship, for instance, are you willing to accept those terms? Know what is on and off the table before you make you make your pitch. Contact the Right PersonBefore you approach your potential sponsors, do your homework and determine the right point of contact. Depending on the business, you might find this task is easier said than done. Large companies, particularly alcoholic beverage businesses, for examples, are approached frequently, so you will likely find specific instructions for making a sponsorship bid on their website. Follow their procedures, even if you feel like their rules restrict the way you envision making your pitch. These rules are in place to help the company effectively deal with requests, and if you dont stick to them, your request will likely be destined for rejection. With smaller companies, start with the PR and marketing department. For very small, local businesses without designated departments, start with the owner or manager.  Come Prepared to SellWhile sponsorship might be old hat to some large companies, the local mom and pop shop youre eying as a partner for your local gig might never have considered the possibility. You might have to sell the entire idea to them - what youre seeking, what youre offering, and why it would be good for you both. Be prepared to take the lead and convince them that sponsorship is a winning ideashow them the road map to making it happen. Approaching Tour Sponsorship Ask the ExpertsVenues can be a great source of information- in fact, the booker at the venue might have a standing relationship with sponsors, such as an alcoholic beverage company they can contact on your behalf to sponsor an open bar for your gig in exchange for some branding. Agents and promoters are also excellent info sources.Check WebsitesLook at arena tours of major artists. There is almost always a big league sponsor on board. You might not land that same sponsor for your small club tour, but the companies you see attached to larger tours provide clues for your to follow. Check out their websites - youll almost certainly find information about applying for sponsorship, including the requirements. You may find that the company is willing to sponsor smaller scale shows. Companies accustomed to music sponsorship sometimes run contests that award smaller acts with big money sponsorship. Take some time to get to know the usual suspects and keep them on your radar. Consider the SourceSponsorship almost always comes at some kind of cost, but is the price tag worth it? Knowing your audience is critical to making your music career work, and sponsorship is an excellent case in point. What will your fans allow? A beer sponsorship might turn off some fans of your Christian rock band while your megastore sponsorship might send the indie kids running for the hills. Think carefully about companies with clear political and religious affiliations, and remember that alcohol and tobacco can be controversial to some groups. Youre linking your name to this sponsor, so make sure that youre building a relationship that you and your fans are comfortable with. Get Savvy With FinancesMoney is ALWAYS an issue in the music industry. Learn more about how you can manage your cash with info about funding sources, preparing funding applications and business plans, and how to spend the money once you do get it. Hold Up Your End of the Sponsorship Bargain Being professional will ensure that the deal goes smoothly and will open the door to future opportunities by: Responding to all requests for information from your sponsor promptly.Staying on top of the planning process (if you have a manager, this is a job for him). Make sure the plan is progressing and stay connected with your sponsor so all of their materials are on track for on-time delivery.Ensuring that all advertising, marketing and signage adheres to the sponsorship deal.

Microfluidics Helps Solve the Mysteries of Sickle Cell Disease

Microfluidics Helps Solve the Mysteries of Sickle Cell Disease Microfluidics Helps Solve the Mysteries of Sickle Cell Disease Microfluidics Helps Solve the Mysteries of Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder that affects more than 13 million people around the world. Sufferers of SCD carry a mutated form of hemoglobin that changes their red blood cells into stiff, sickle-shaped cells that slow down the flow of blood, sometimes piling up and blocking blood vessels, resulting in vaso-occlusion events that can cause severe pain, organ damage, and tissue death. For many other diseases, molecular biomarkers are useful as predictive indicators and can guide intervention and treatment. However, no reliable molecular markers exist for SCD. Fortunately, a team of researchers at the University of Minnesotas Living Devices Laboratory has discovered a biophysical marker that holds great promise for helping to determine the severity of sickle cell disease in patients, as well as developing new treatment methods. David K. Wood, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Minnesota, and collaborator John Higgins, MD at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, developed a microfluidic device that can characterize the dynamics of vaso-occlusion by measuring a biophysical parameter that quantifies the rate of change of the resistance to flow. This can also indicate disease severity and possibly be used to reduce the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises. Normal red blood cells flowing freely through veins (top). Abnormal, sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow in a blood vessel (bottom). Image: Wikimedia Commons A Microfluidics Approach The major challenge of this research was to develop a system that could measure the complex rheological properties of sickle blood as it passes through small blood vessels with decreasing oxygen levels, says Wood. To achieve this, Woods group developed a microfluidic platform that recreates the size scale and pressures seen in the microvasculature in vivo, while simultaneously controlling blood oxygen concentration. Sickle blood flows through a microchannel, roughly the size of an arteriole or venule, under constant pressure drop. The microchannel is diffusively coupled to a gas reservoir in which the oxygen concentration was controlled by a custom-built gas mixer. The oxygen concentration in the gas reservoir was measured in real time using a fiber optic oxygen sensor inserted into the outlet of the gas reservoir, which was under constant flow. This allowed real-time control for many parameters that mimic the physiological conditions that occur during vaso-occlusion, including channel size, blood pressure, and oxygen concentration. To measure blood flow, a high-speed camera captured high frame rate video sequences of flowing blood in real time. Cells in each video frame were identified computationally based on morphologic criteria. Cell locations in subsequent frames were linked to form trajectories using heuristics and machine learning techniques. The researchers defined the velocity at each point in time as the median cell velocity calculated over a 32-frame video captured at higher than 200 frames per second. Using the velocities computed from video tracking and the applied pressures, the effective viscosity was calculated assuming Stokes flow through a rectangular channel. A major innovation in this work is the building of microchips that actually show uswhatsgoing on inside the human body, says Wood. With these devices, blood flowsjust like it does in the human body and we can reproduce the same kind of complications in the chipsthat people with sickle cell disease experience. Promising Results As oxygen concentration in the blood is reduced, blood velocity remains constant until a critical concentration of oxygen is reached. Once the oxygen concentration drops below this threshold, the velocity decreases significantly, and at a lower oxygen threshold, the blood fully occludes the microchannel. These oxygen thresholds indicate where rheological changes can be expected to begin in the vasculature and where occlusions are most likely to occur. The group also measured the rate of change in viscosity during an in vitro vaso-occlusive event and found that these measurements correlated very well with overall patient disease severity. Just by measuring a sickle cell patients blood in our device, we can tell you how they are doingclinicallyand whether they are at risk for complications, says Wood. The correlation of blood rheology with patient clinical course is completely new. Were not measuring individual molecules. Were actually measuring the fluid mechanical properties of the blood, and we can use those as biomarkers. Woods research findings could be groundbreaking for developing more effective therapeutics for SCD that shift the viscosity-oxygen relationship to significantly reduce the likelihood of occlusion. The oxygen thresholds Wood has identified could also serve as biomarkers for identifying clinical severity, thereby stratifying patient groups and prioritizing experimental treatments. The idea of using micro devices to model human physiology is an exciting, rapidly growing field with huge potential for treating a wide range of health conditions. For the first time, we are starting to truly understandsickle cell disease, says Wood. We are directly measuring the changes in blood flow that occur in the microcirculation, and we are beginning to understand under what conditions patients will be at risk. Based on our biomarker results, one big application is in diagnosis and clinical monitoring. Even moreexciting is that we could use this device in drug development. No assay exists that can predict the efficacy of potential therapies, andthe result is that no broadly effective therapies exist. Hopefully, using our devices, we can shorten the pipeline and help bring some new therapies to market. Mark Crawford is an independent writer.
